Assistant Controller

Department: Accounting - Office
Location: West Des Moines, IA

Position Summary

The Assistant Controller will support the Corporate Controller in managing accounting operations, ensuring financial accuracy, and compliance. This position will help to coordinate and support monthly consolidation close activities for timeliness, accuracy, and completeness. This role will also play a crucial part in financial planning and analysis activities, providing critical insights and forecasts to guide business decisions. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in both accounting and FP&A, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Financial Reporting:

  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles).
    • Assists with the monthly and annual consolidation of all company entities.
  • Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assist in the preparation and review of financial forecasts and budgets.

Accounting Operations:

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger.
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of financial records and maintain proper documentation.
  • Monitor and reconcile balance sheet accounts and resolve discrepancies.

Financial Planning & Analysis:

  • Conduct financial analysis, including variance analysis, trend analysis, and financial modeling to support business planning and strategic decision-making.
  • Develop and maintain financial forecasts, budgets, and long-term financial plans.
  • Provide insights and recommendations based on financial analysis to improve financial performance and achieve business objectives.

Internal Controls and Compliance:

  • Assist in the development, implementation, and monitoring of internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure compliance with corporate policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Support external audits by preparing audit schedules, responding to auditor inquiries, and providing necessary documentation.
  • Stay current with changes in accounting regulations and standards, ensuring compliance and proper application.

Process Improvement:

  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and efficiencies in accounting operations and financial reporting.
  • Assist in the implementation of new accounting systems, processes, and procedures.
  • Provide training and support to accounting staff on new systems and procedures.

Team Leadership:

  • Provide guidance and support to the accounting team, fostering a collaborative and productive work environment.
  • Assist in the development and mentoring of junior accounting staff.
  • Act as a point of contact for accounting-related inquiries and issues.

Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field; CPA certification preferred.
  • 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a corporate or public accounting environment.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
  • Proven experience in financial planning and analysis (FP&A), including budgeting, forecasting, and financial modeling.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., Sage Construction 300, MarkSystems, Entrata) and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Experience in software conversions (e.g. Yardi) is a plus.

  • Experience in supervising and mentoring accounting staff is preferred.
