Senior Accountant

Department: Accounting - Office
Location: West Des Moines, IA

Position Summary

The senior accountant position is an exempt position. Normal working hours for the team are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Hours may vary during peak seasons.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Accounting and Financial Reporting

  • Prepares and posts journal and job cost entries.
  • Reconciles balance sheet accounts.
  • Reviews income and expense accounts for proper classification.
  • Prepares financial statements including balance sheet, income statement and cash flow statement.
  • Submits financial package for review and approval.
  • Prepares work papers, schedules and documentation for investors, lenders, regulators, auditors, and tax preparers as needed.
  • Coordinates preparation and review of reports as required by lenders and equity partners.
  • Updates chart of accounts and job cost codes for assigned entities.
  • Develops and maintains documentation processes and procedures
  • Reviews financial statements and reconciliations prepared by other accountants for assigned entities.

2. Entity Budgeting

  • Coordinates budgeting process, holds budget preparers accountable to meet deadlines and produce quality budgets, and reviews budgets for assigned entities.
  • Calculates certain budget amounts and provides to the budget preparers
  • Converts cash-basis budget to create an accrual-basis budget.

3. System Setup and Maintenance

  • Provides technical support to companies for accounting systems.
  • Serves as a resource and trainer for various software and tools, including Timberline (Sage 300), lien waiver portal, and Nexus.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves system problems, working with IT, Production Controller, and/or vendors as needed.

4. Relationship Management

  • Provides prompt and courteous service at all times.
  • Performs job responsibilities in accordance with the company’s policies.
  • Clearly and concisely discusses accounting-related matters with target audiences.
  • Actively cooperates with all internal service delivery partners to provide optimal service to customers.
  • Follows up with internal and external customers on a regular basis to ensure their business needs and expectations are understood and are being met.

5. Accounting Team Resource

  • Coordinates and maintains accounting procedures for assigned responsibilities.
  • Serves as a trusted resource of technical, process and policy information for other accountants.
  • Serves as backup to other accounting positions as assigned.
  • Works with the team to automate manual processes and implement identified project improvements.
    • Utilizes education, training, and prior financial records found in accounting systems and files when faced with the new tasks. Recognizes when and to whom to ask questions.
    • Anticipates and plans for unexpected issues while being open to making the extra effort that may be required at the time.

6. Other duties assigned

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting required, CPA preferred.
  • Five years’ minimum accounting experience.
  • Real estate accounting experience required.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite including Microsoft word and Excel required. Sage 300 (Timberline), and/or Sage FAS a plus.
