Commercial Construction Intern

Department: Hubbell Construction - Office
Location: West Des Moines, IA

Duties and Responsibilities Field Responsibilities

1. Assist superintendent with planning, scheduling, tracking, managing and motivating multiple subcontractors and suppliers for the project assigned.

3. Assist superintendent with overall schedule management, including two week schedules as well as master schedule updates.

4. Assist superintendent with safety compliance to include OSHA, federal, state, municipal and project specific regulatory safety requirements to ensure and provide the safest working environment for all project members and visitors.

6. Assist superintendent with regular meeting facilitation, which may include safety meetings, foreman meetings, owner and architect meetings, etc.

7. Assist superintendent with project quality control and testing.

8. Assist superintendent with layout and verification of layout elevations and material utilization for all subcontractors.

11. Maintains positive working environment for entire site team.

12. Assist superintendent with reviewing and coordinating shop drawings, samples and spec sheets.

13. Perform general carpentry and clean up duties as assigned.

Office Responsibilities

1. Review plans and specifications to assist the project manager.

2. Attends/conducts project meetings as needed; publishes minutes and follows up with action items as needed to expedite project.

3. Makes site visits as required by the project manager. Substantial time may be required at jobsites as needed.

4. Provides jobsite and project reporting to project manager as needed.

5. Assist project manager with documentation including contracts, change orders, submittals, RFIs, and supplemental drawings. Estimating and quantity take off as needed by project manager.

6. Assist with distributing revised drawings and changes to subcontractors.

7. Obtain additional pricing and prepares change orders for project manager review.

8. Assist project manager with a timely project close out.

9. Other duties as assigned.

Special Requirements

  • Working towards Bachelor’s degree in construction management or construction engineering.
  • Working knowledge of commercial building construction activities.
  • Ability to work well with diverse groups of people.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret plans, specifications and shop drawings.
  • Ability to manage on-site personnel.
  • Ability to provide assigned personnel with positive work environment, growth and training.
  • Ability to interact professionally with all parties associated with project.
  • Valid driving license and clean driving record required.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs. from floor / ground to window height frequently.
  • When lift exceeds 100 pounds, other personnel will provide assistance and /or the use of lifting equipment such as a hand truck, dolly, hoist or lifting straps will be required.
  • Constant ability to walk, kneel, bend, crouch, climb, crawl, etc. to reach items in need of repair.
  • Tolerance to all extremes of hot and cold weather (below 0 and above 100 degrees) frequently.
