Conservation Prairie Management Internship

Department: HRC Association Management
Location: West Des Moines, IA

Position Summary

Seasonal position, standard hours are Monday through Friday with a flexible start time. with a one-hour unpaid lunch break during an 8-hour shift. Under the supervision of Hubbell Maintenance Supervisor, maintain the conservation areas in Homeowner Association community common areas managed by HRC Association Management. Activities include trimming and removing trees, weed treatment, trash clean up, conservation area mapping and general prairie maintenance. Basic conservation or prairie maintenance experience is a plus.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Controls noxious weeds in prairie restoration areas by chemical and mechanical means.
  • Performs woody species control.
  • Assists with the creation and execution of conservation management plans.
  • Reviews stormwater infrastructure in designated conservation areas.
  • Assist management staff with creation of educational materials related to conservation.
  • Weeds and maintains landscape beds and community entry features.
  • Plants landscape trees, bushes, shrubs, and flowers.
  • Performs minor trimming of trees and bushes.
  • Performs mulching, watering, and laying sod.
  • Inspects walking trails and general grounds trash pickup.
  • Maintains cleanliness of the worksite.
  • Manages all prairie area and conservation community related issues, including prairie maintenance.
  • Analyzes the needs of conservation communities and prairie areas and make recommendations to manage, maintain and improve.
  • Creates prairie management, maintenance and restoration plans and schedules.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Working toward a degree in Natural Resources Management or similar conservation-related degrees.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Must be able to work under limited supervision and follow standardized practices.
  • Must have the use of a dependable vehicle, a valid Iowa driver’s license, and basic insurance covering the vehicle that will be used for work. Mileage reimbursement provided.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds occasionally to include but not limited to lifting bags of soil/mulch into truck beds. Lifts exceeding 50 lbs. should be team lifts.
  • Ability to frequently walk, kneel, bend, crouch, climb, crawl, pull, etc. to reach items in need of repair or pulling weeds.
  • Tolerance to frequent extremes of hot weather (above 100 degrees).
  • Must remain alert at all times to perform essential functions of position.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
  • Gloves, tools, and uniform shirts provided. Other equipment such as sunscreen, hat, work boots, and water are the employee’s responsibility.
  • Excellent customer service skills required, with the ability to handle difficult customers.
